Custom Designed Websites

What does custom designed mean, really?

Custom Design includes:

  • extensive client consultation
  • all necessary graphics, layouts & navigation systems
  • necessary copywriting
  • interactive elements*
  • implementation of client supplied 3rd party software/ecommerce
  • meta tags
  • search engine submission
  • promotional support
* some elements may require third party script/software

All elements are built from scratch.

It's more expensive (but still reasonable), highly flexible, longer to build but exactly what you ask for (if what you ask for is technically possible). These are the sites for people who have a specific purpose in mind for their site.

Custom design is a little different from customization of packages, in that you come to us with a vision and we work around it, rather than fitting your vision into a box.

"...BUT I DON'T HAVE ANY SPECIFIC IDEAS YET!"

Fear not! We'll help you! Extensive consultation and brainstorming is included in our custom work. We work WITH YOU to get a site that suits your market, your product/service, your style and your needs.

FIRST, we'll give you a ballpark estimate to work from. This ballpark will be within $2000 of your actual project cost on one side or the other. And this is the point where you get to decide if you want to proceed with us, or look around some more.

Getting the initial ballpark doesn't cost you anything, nor obligate you to hire us.

Why such a broad margin? Because until we get started we won't know EXACTLY what you want, and we have found that clients who aren't really sure what they want are often unaware of what's possible, especially if this is their first website. Often, when you first think about it, you don't think of everything. So, we give you a big ballpark to play in.

So - once the ballpark has been approved and a deposit secured (we charge 30% up front) we get down to brass tacks... and the real fun begins!

One thing we'll guarantee you... no matter what the final quote is, you WILL get more than your money's worth. How can we guarantee that? By having a work ethic that dictates value added service. We won't nickle and dime you to death, and we won't charge you extra if it takes us longer than we say it will.

SECOND, before anything goes on screen - we will ask you LOTS OF QUESTIONS. These will help us determine your vision, the amount of interactivity you want, the edge you want to cut with your site, the functionality it will include, and what EXACTLY you want to give your visitors. We'll ask you about elements/departments to include - some of which you may not have considered. Once we're satisfied that we have a good idea of what you want, we'll send you a project outline and itemized quote. This process can take a couple days or a couple weeks - depending on your answers. We also ask that you send us ALL the printed material you currently use so we can keep your current image in mind.

THEN we get started planning. We pull out the Post-it Notes®, clear off a chunk of wall and start playing with structure. While we do that, we take all the files from our conversations with you and generate design ideas. Once we get some that we're happy with, we'll send you drafts to look at... and we're off to the races!

After the structure and basic layout are determined, we template it and create secondary, pop up and other page layouts that may be required, based on your content.

Something that really helps cut costs is drawing a map of your site - as you see it - relative pages, what should be logically linked to what, images that you want to use.

Things to keep in mind:

  • the more final copy you send us the faster we can go
  • the more pre-scanned images your can provide us with the less it will cost you
  • the clearer idea of what you want, the faster and cheaper your site will be
  • you are the boss, so ultimately, you decide what stays and what goes
  • web design is NOT an overnight process. It's like fine wine... it takes time...
  • haste makes waste

The next phase is filling the layout with your content, according to the determined structure. Adding in graphics and interactivity where appropriate.

And finally, going "live" to start testing and tweaking.

* includes graphic design, copyrighting, image manipulation... the more of it we have to do for you, the more your site will cost - you can CUT COSTS by providing us with exact copy, pre-scanned/treated images, existing thirdparty software you may have, etc.
